Shut up, crime!
In this outlandish dark comedy, writer-director James Gunn has created what is perhaps the definitive take on self-reflexive superheroes. When sad-sack loser Frank (Rainn Wilson, Peep World) sees his ex-addict wife (Liv Tyler, The Incredible Hulk) willingly snatched by a seductive drug dealer (Kevin Bacon, Frost/Nixon), he finds himself bereft and wholly unable to cope. But soon he decides to fight back under the guise of a DIY superhero called Crimson Bolt.
With a hand-made suit, a wrench, and a crazed sidekick named Boltie (Ellen Page, Inception), the Crimson Bolt beats his way through the mean streets of crime in hopes of saving his wife.
The rules were written a long time ago: You are not supposed to molest children, cut lines or key cars; if you do, prepare to face the wrath of the Crimson Bolt!
H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S!
Rotten: I will say this of Super: it commits to its premise far better than Kick-Ass; if you thought the latter was violent, you haven't seen Rainn Wilson cracking someone's head repeatedly on a rock. But at least Kick-Ass was fun.
-Simon Miraudo, Quickflix, September 01, 2011Fresh: Super is a film infused with that impossibly compelling mix of deeply empathic insights, disturbingly-visualised violence and goodwill-rousing positive energy.

-Thomas Caldwell, Cinema Autopsy, August 13, 2011Rotten: Some really interesting ideas and the odd flash of awesomeness, but overall a big old misfire with some ill-judged nastiness.
